sand
i have brown mix sand... and i have seen my parrots do this before... shoot sand through their gills. it should be fine, although they dont really do it that often.. and the brown sand has worked well for me, it always looks clean :)
sand or gravel
It's probably"normal" for your fish (although that about blowing sand through the gills is a new one),sand or gravel are both fine, its a personal preference, light sand shows up poop, dark sand wont,sand is easier to clean as everything stays on the top, sand is a better choice if you want to plant your tank (with cichlids why bother?)however sand can get sucked up the filter(stick old pantyhose over the bottom bit,guys be careful here,)What about fine crushed gravel, Ive got black
