I feed my babies a wide variety of fish food
First, Good Luck with your new baby Cindy97! I know you will be hooked the second you set your eyes on your new little darling!!
My BP's are truly like my children as I love them so much and they are so rewarding to raise. I tend to feed them first thing every morning when I first wake up. Even before I eat myself. As soon as my alarm goes off, and the bedside lamp comes on, they KNOW what's comming!! They start swimming to the top and front of the tank as soon as they see me getting out of bed. It is sooo funny. I give them a mix of Freeze dried blood worms and earthworm flakes for breakfast. When I get home from work, I give them live black worms. They just go crazy for these!! I also feed them again right before I go to bed another round of their morning treats.
Just a note: They seem to eat whatever I try, they are not picky at all!! But I try and keep them on a healthy diet.
Good Luck!
new owner
wow, good advice there, all I can add to it is to give the shelled frozen thawed peas once a week, welcome to our site, i think the most inportant single thing is the big tank, even if it means waiting in order to get it
thank you!
thanks for the help!
Also DO NOT listen to what
Also DO NOT listen to what store tells you about tank size, they are gonna tell you what you want to hear in order to get you to buy the fish. They will not live in a small tank. This is how big they can get:

These are the owner of the sites blood parrots, they got big. But she had a big tank as well.
I have a 75 gallon with 4 parrots and an oscar. I have to get a bigger tank because the blood parrots with reach 8 - 10 inches and the oscar will reach 16 inches. This is my tank, the parrot with black on the top and bottom with orange in the middle was a baby I bought from Petsmart 5 months ago to the day and the one with yellow on the bottom a and blackish grey and the top is a baby I got from them a couple weeks ago.

I take it this is your first
I take it this is your first fish. You need to read this, its very important: http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php
Before you get started, know this is a costly venture. There are 2 ways to do it. One way is half-assed and leaves you with a not healthy fish that ends up dying on you. The other is a hard but rewarding but also costly. These are awesome friendly fish that can easily turn in a great family pet on the same level as a dog.
1. I would recommend either Tetra Cichlids small granules or Hikari Cichlid Staples mini pellets.
2. The minimum is a 30 gallon tank but bigger is better. Trust me, if you want a happy healthy fish get AT LEAST a 30 gallon. These fish live at least 10 years so its a big commitment. With a 30 gallon, it will out grow it in a year to a year in a half. I would say get a 55 gallon that way you can add some small other fish and it had plenty of room to grow and be happy.
3. Walmart fish are sickly fish. I have 4 and I bought one from Walmart only because he had been there for a month and was starting to get ick which is a sickness that will kill the fish if untreated. He his happy an healthy now but I would not get one from there unless its that reason. I would recommend Petsmart or Petco or any clean Local Fish Store. Petsmart sells small ones for $10 and medium sized for $25. Petco sells small to medium for $18. DO NOT BUY ANY THAT ARE MISSING A TAIL OR DYED, these fish will not live as long as a normal one and haven been put through a horrible process.
If they look like this do not buy them because they have been dyed:

They often go by the name Jellybean Parrot or Bubblegum Parrot.
If they look like this do not buy them because when they were babies they had their tails cut off to make a heart shape:

They are called Love Parrot and Heart Parrot.
These are what normal parrots look like:

4. Babies are 2 inches and under. They can be black, brown, yellow or grey and as they get older will turn orange. You will also see orange colored ones under 2 inches and are still babies. Petsmart sells babies for $10.
Do not buy more than one fish when you first start. If you any question feel free to ask.
thank you!
