I just what to know if anybody can help answer my question. My parrot fish (8cms) its fully orange but its starting to get black colouration at the end of the tail and the top fin. What does this transformation mean?.

Its showing signs of stress, usual cause is poor water conditions so test your water first then do a 30% water change every day or other day until black is gone ( can take a week or so) if the water test shows a problem you need to rectify it, other causes can be new tank mates, change of environment, new food, temp, spawning activity, in fact anything that can stress your fish, whatever the cause water changes will help anyway, if you can post as much information as possible regarding conditions and any changes it will be helpful, meanwhile read everything on "black spot" on this site

black spots usually come from stress like shaz said. test your water then do a 30% water change. how big is your tank? how many fish do you have in there and what types? have you added any new fish to your gang? these can all cause stress to fish as well as poor water. just answer the questions as soon as you can and we will help you

Hi guys. I'm new here. I really have only one question. How old is your oldest Parrot Fish? Mine is 13 years old and still going strong. Is this the norm for this type of fish. Thanks for any comments.

the average lifespan is supposed to be 10 years, but i have heard of some cichlids living for 15. my oldest parrot is at least 6 but i don't know exactly how old. he was full grown when i got him.

Ok we had the same problem and even black in other areas of ours. We found out its called black fish disease. You need a 5-10 gallon tank to put your fish in and treat the fish with maracide as directed. You could treat your fish in a larger tank but this stuff is very expensive. We have had no problem with the other fish acquiring it from her but this stuff has been working and has lessened the black on our parrot fish.

If you hadnt already figured this out I hope maybe this can help if youre still searching for an idea of your fishes problem.

Good luck!

almost right, its called black spot disease ,and isn't a disease at all, its a sign that something isn't quite right, IE, water, tank mates, tank size, lots of things, if you can figure what is wrong and rectify it ,the black usually goes,in a lot of cases daily partial water changes solve the problem, and should be done first anyway before using chemicals
