Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

Hi,

A lady gave me three jellybean parrots today. Two were a pair that had successfully mated several times earlier and a baby that didn't survive the ride home.

I have them with a heater, biological fitration system, and tank decor. Is there anything else that I will need to do so that they keep breeding in my tank.

Thanks,
Kolton

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

None of the eggs have yet to survive, or even hatch.

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

They laid eggs, but after about a day they disappeared. The male is diggind out another hole and the female has turned a red-orange color again. I hope that they hatch this time since the laid that owned them before me successfully bred them several times.

update on the spawning

i was wondering how the breeding was going. jelly bean females get a redish belly when they are ready to lay eggs. like the convict females.

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

The male is digging a huge hole in the stones, so I think she will be laying them soon.

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

Would a octinclus catfish do good? I know that they like smaller tank mates and my parrots are semi-small.

Re: Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

octinclus catfish would be ok

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

water changes can trigger spawnig also. you could also put a third fish (dither fish)in the tank. this will unite them against a common enemy. just make sure it is fast. like danio or something similar. NO PLECOS. plecos work the night shift and while the parents are sleeping after protecting the eggs all day, the pleco will eat all their eggs.

Re: Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

Is there some other kind of algae eating fish besides the pleco that would be egg safe?

Re: Re: Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

cory cats work good. just remember when buying cory cats, buy at least 4 or 5 of them.they like to be in small groups.if you got one it'll most likely get really stressed and go die.

Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

The female has now turned a deep orange color and neither one of them mare died/tattooed. I have heard that this is a sign that they are about to breed. Is this true, and what will I need to do with the babies.

Re: Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

im not quite sure if turning colours is what they do when they're ready to breed?but dyed or tattooed parrots do change into a orangey red or yellowish orange. My friend (who has sucessfully breed his parrots) told me that the parents will care for the fry until they're ready to breed again(3 to 5 weeks). when they are ready to come out of the tank(babies)put them into a 10 gallon or even better 20 and feed them powdered flake foods and/or live baby brine shrimp.

Re: Re: Re: Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

There is already some people who are wanting some of them as soon as they are ready to come out of the tank. So I will be getting rid of most of them pretty soon.

Re:Breeding Pair of Jellybeans

good.now i would keep the temperture around 83 F. that sometimes triggers breeding.add caves too.
