I'm very glad I found this forum. I just got my fist blood parrot after wanting one for at least 6 months. My 5 year old's preschool has one and I've always loved it. Well, 'she' (cause I don't know what it is) is in the tank with a bunch of mollies we've had for a long time and all of a sudden I can't find her. After looking harder i found her practically under a mopani branch i have in there. Don't know how she did that, and she won't come out. That is when i 'goolged' the problem and found you guys. I went back to the tank to see where she was and she was under the filter looking stuck so i coaxed her out and she went for this circular piece of lava rock i have in there. She promptly backed herself into the hole at a diagonal and again, won't come out. Cameron (the 5 year old) and I were sitting in front of the tank to, as per one of the posts, let her get used to us and we started discussing names. "Swimmy" was Cam's first choice then Corey (the 17year old) said "Swimmy, heck you might as well call her "Stuck in a Rock" cause she hasn't swam since you got her" Hence the name "Stucky"!!

Re: Stucky
ok here is undoubtedly a stupid question but what are dither fish? I am pretty new to the hobby have only had fish for 4 months now. Again i do apologise if this is a really stupid question........I was told on another board I had a psychosis because I asked too many questions but I am just to learn all I can to do the best for my fish
dither fish
some cichlids would hide all the time but the addition of dither fish calm them down and make them feel relaxed about swimming around in open water, its like they think that if the little fish can swim about without harm so can I,good dither fish for parrots are silver dollars ,congo or black skirt tetras and giant danio, when poss dither fish should be added first to enable them to settle before adding the larger more aggressive parrots, ask some people add dither fish to help cycle the tank but I prefer fishless cycleing, ask as many questions as you like, we love it!
stucky
Hi welcome to the illusive world of the blood parrot, food is the key, eventually it will start to come out looking for food, dont overfeed,(watch your 5year old) I think everyone on this site has a fish whose middle name could be stucky!!! parrots just luvvvvv caves and pots, PS I know this seems hard to believe right now but in time stucky probably will start to bully your mollies, need to keep an eye on that, join us in the chat room mondays, see countdown timer
Re: stucky
thanks for that info. after looking at a few pics members had put online i found an unused terra cotta pot and put that in, sure as your word, she was in there in no time. when i sat in front watching her she went back to the mopani branch and started playing peek-a-boo with me. I'm definitely watching the molly thing. It won't be terrible if a few 'disappeared', we started with 4 and now have over 20. love each and everyone as if they were my own, but enough's enough! I think we do have a bp with quite a personality which is exactly what i was looking for. So let me ask this then, when i've read a few posts about 'dither' fish, why wouldn't you consider the mollies as dither. excuse the question if it is an overly newbie question but i'm newish.
mollies
When it comes to dither fish all aspects are taken into account, not just whether they will fight, for instance, tetras can be stressed out by fast moving fish even though they not being attacked, with others it may be a case of differing water conditions or planting or food requirements, if there is any doubt at all the result will say incompatible, with others it will be more obvious and result in all out war, just watch carefully, also it depends on the size of the fish, some plecos begin to stick to the sides of parrots as they get bigger, people do have mollies and parrots together, I just think they are not the first choice if you were setting up a brand new tank
